There are four characteristics that determine the value of a diamond : A stone's cut, which depends on the craftsman's skill, its clarity, its weight in carats, and finally its color.

- Clarity : a natural diamond often contains small impurities, inclusions, which fragilise a stone. The size and the number of these inclusions also determine a diamond's value.
